Dynamic QR Code Editing

QR Codes functionality and destination

QR Codes are designed so that the scanners of the code are directed to a certain destination and function on their mobile devices. The function refers to the action that the phone is supposed to do such as the opening of a URL with the phone’s browser and the destination refers to the specific goal that the action is supposed to accomplish, such as the particular website that the browser should open. There are many different types of functions and applications that can be opened and destinations that the scanner might be directed to with the use of QR Codes, such as opening specific locations with Google Maps, composing emails with the phone’s email application, saving vCards into the address book, opening URLs or even dialing a phone number automatically. When users generate a QR Code, they can choose which type of function they want their QR Code to provide and what destination they want their scanners to be directed to with the use of that function. Thus the QR Code acts as a kind of hyperlink that bridges the gap between the physical product and the function and destination that the business or person would like to provide their customers with or direct them to.

Dynamic QR Codes can be edited after being printed

The question that naturally rises is if it is possible to change the function or destination that the QR Code leads to after it has been created, thus creating a dynamic QR Code that bestows a unique flexibility on marketing campaigns unheard of in the past. When the data containing the function and destination are encoded directly into the QR Code, this option isn’t possible and requires a new QR Code to be created for each slight adjustment of function or destination. At Visualead, we use an innovative URL shortening technology that stores the QR Code’s data and functionality within our servers and allow the scanners of the code to access that data via the shortened URL. This allows the users of Visualead’s technology to vary their QR Code’s functionality and destinations continuously with the use of Visualead’s dashboard and generator as they are simply altering the functions and destinations that are stored on the servers while the QR Code’s access to that data via the URL shortening technology is unaffected, permitting the QR Code to remain untouched.

The significance of this ability is that the printed QR Code can remain untouched upon the physical product, poster or advertisement, yet its destination can be changed every week or even every day – one day leading to the company’s website, the next to its location and the third to a vCard – each time without the need to reprint the QR Code which remains untouched wherever it was originally placed. This allows the one-time process of designing the Visual QR Code within the advertisement and printing it to be separated from the continuous process of updating its destination and/or function. This capacity confers a compelling proprietary edge on the users of the QR Code in their marketing strategy as it allows them a unique and inexpensive flexibility in their advertising campaigns.
